The drop rate is slow. I mean really slow. I have been playing for over a month and only have 120 Crafting Metals. I have a couple of unlocks so I would estimate I had maybe 350 in total. They vary due to RNG but a typical drop might only give you 15 Crafting Metals. You might get more if you’re lucky but this seems typical.
 
Buying Apex Crates is not guaranteed to drop Crafting Metals either. The game uses the loot box method so it’s down to RNG whether you get Crafting Metals or not and in what quantity or level. Unless you can afford it, buying Apex Crates purely for Crafting Metals doesn’t make sense right now.
 
Players have protection from having bad luck with their packs, an issue that has frustrated players in others games that include loot boxes, and this means that you can earn at least one legendary item within 30 packs.
 
You can find multiple rarities of Crafting Metals in Apex Packs that will each give you a different amount of resources. You can then use 30 Crafting Metal to make a Common item, 60 for a Rare item, 400 for an Epic item, or 1,200 for Legendary stuff.
